For foodies: restaurants and cafes in Koh Chang. Authentic dishes and delicacies, where to go for dinner. Restaurants on Koh Chang, a real gastronomic guide of the island! Restaurants on the map of Koh Chang

TOURISTS' ANSWERS:

The island of Koh Chang is a place where you can not only relax your soul and body, but also your stomach. Local restaurants and cafes offer a wide range of culinary delights at very economical prices. So, not trying Thai cuisine on Koh Chang is a big crime, primarily against yourself. And if suddenly Thai cuisine is not to your taste, there are many restaurants on the island that also offer European dishes. But let's talk about everything in order and let's start with what you definitely need to try.

A short list of the best dishes (subjective view):

Som Tam. This is a zesty green papaya salad. Its second name is pok-pok, I still don’t understand why. Papaya, peanuts, green tomatoes, other vegetables, dried shrimp or crabs, crushed to the desired condition. Usually served with rice and fried chicken. Amazingly tasty, but very spicy. It’s better to ask the chef to pepper it in front of you and to your taste.

Khao Pad. This is the best option when you want to eat, but don’t know what to choose. Fried rice, with tomatoes, chicken, garlic, onions, eggs and tomatoes. Shrimp may be added. Drizzled with fish sauce, it's absolutely delicious and yet simple and satisfying.

Tom Yum soup. An amazing soup because it is sour, sweet and spicy. The soup contains a lot of local herbs, some roots and shrimp. Plus lemon juice. It's worth a try.

Pad Thai. This is perhaps the most famous Thai dish, without which a Thai restaurant is not a restaurant at all. But on Koh Chang they prepare it especially tasty. Fried noodles with bean sprouts, onions and something else :) There are various additives to choose from, I personally like it with fried peanuts and chili.

In principle, if you describe all the dishes that are worth trying, then you could write for a long time. My personal advice is to pay more attention to seafood on Koh Chang. Fresh, tasty, prepared in a variety of ways, and very inexpensive. Shrimp, squid, shellfish, crabs, fish, all this is in great abundance. If there are doubts about freshness, then to remove them, it makes sense to go to the village of Bang Bao, where the pier is full of restaurants with seafood cuisine, and seafood can be brought directly to you by boat from the sea. Much fresher. As noted above, there are many restaurants here, you can choose any, all are good. But if you want to eat crabs and shrimp, then Ruen Thai Seafood, in my opinion, is the best place.

It should definitely be noted that the cuisine of Thailand in general, and Koh Chang in particular, is very spicy and not always, our stomachs, which are not accustomed to it, can react adequately to it. Take sorbents, activated carbon and other drugs that solve these problems with you on your trip. They won't be superfluous for sure.

Now about the prices.

The price level, as elsewhere, depends on the level of the restaurant, but in general, there are no particularly pretentious ones on Koh Chang, except perhaps Nirvana Restaurant in Bang Bao, and even then, by Moscow standards, it is inexpensive. And so on average, the cost of a second course in a mid-range restaurant will cost 150-200 baht (the baht is approximately equal to the ruble). In makashnitsa you can have a hearty snack for 120 baht, it is either fish or meat with rice. There are all kinds of kebabs on skewers at prices ranging from 20 to 30 baht. True, I didn’t dare eat them. For breakfast, pancakes with different fillings are perfect - 20-25 baht, or fresh fruit slices for a similar price. In general, it is difficult to die of hunger here.

Is the answer helpful?

What is?

The cuisine of the Kingdom of Thailand has developed over many centuries under the influence of Indian, Chinese and European cooking traditions. The most important ingredient used in almost all dishes is rice, because it’s not for nothing that the word “food” in Thai means “to eat rice.” The use of spices such as chili pepper and curry is no less widespread. Thanks to these spices, almost all dishes of traditional Thai cuisine are accompanied by a very bright, spicy taste. Therefore, tourists who do not like spicy food should be told to bring the dish “mai phet” - not spicy, or the standard English “no spicy”. If the food seems too spicy, you should wash it down with freshly squeezed lime juice, which can put out any fire.

What should you try first when you get to Koh Chang? Of course, the spicy-sweet Tom Yum soup is a chicken broth with huge shrimp, pieces of chicken, seafood and ginger, coated with a reddish film of chili pepper. Or its variation - the no less magnificent Tom Yam Kai Nam Khon, where the spiciness of the pepper competes with the sweetness of coconut milk, which is the basis of the soup. Phat Thai noodles fried with egg, lime juice and sugar are also good, which is usually eaten with chicken, seafood and tofu. Or Kai Phat Met Ma Muang Khimphan: pieces of chicken, fried cashew nuts, hot chillies, topped with sweet soy sauce - Thailand will engage all the taste buds!

Where there is?

Street food on Koh Chang

Everywhere on the island you can find a converted scooter, a kind of kitchen on wheels called a makashnitsa. This is where you can try real simple Thai cuisine, without embellishments and tourist attractions - rice and noodles with vegetables or meat, cooked with fish sauce. In the same portable tents you can find pancakes with bananas, condensed milk and coconut cream, which are prepared right in front of you. There are also sweet potatoes, fried bananas, desserts and various dried nasties: grasshoppers, frogs, unknown insects and the most prosaic squid.

There are also merchants on Koh Chang offering sliced fruits chilled in ice or preparing natural juice right in front of you for only 20 baht. You can call such catering outlets not meeting sanitary and hygienic standards or simply dangerous to health, but the fact remains: not a single cafe adapted for tourists will be able to taste such real simple Thai very satisfying and tasty food. Plus, this is a very budget food option for tourists on a limited budget: dinner here will cost 50-60 baht, and such that you definitely won’t want to eat until the morning.

On my own behalf, I can add that when we first came to Thailand, we turned our noses up at these makashniks for some time, fearing poisoning, and the specific smell was repulsive. But realizing that in hygienically clean establishments we would only get a vague idea of real Thai cuisine, we took the plunge. And the food, prepared in the middle of a noisy and dusty street, with not very clean hands, on a paper plate, seemed tens of times tastier than what we were fed in decent places, with normal cutlery, at a clean table overlooking the sea.

Restaurants on White Sand Beach

Where it is difficult to go hungry is on White Sand Beach. And in addition to gastronomic pleasure, here you can get aesthetic pleasure: most restaurants are located right on the shore, also placing tables closer to the edge of the sea, adding pillows and sofas, as well as decorating the space with various lamps and garlands.

Chang Faa Seafood Restaurant offers the best of Thai cuisine as well as the freshest seafood. They can be selected from the chilled lobster, crab and jumbo shrimp display at the front of the restaurant.

The Pink restaurant, located in front of Chan Khao Plaza, is famous for its affordable prices. It offers Thai and international cuisine, as well as vegetarian options.

Monkeys Restaurant offers a wide selection of traditional Thai cuisine, as well as a large selection of alcoholic drinks.

The ideal place to end the day is Lagoon Restaurant, located on the beach under the arches of trees and very beautifully and brightly decorated. In addition to its external beauty, it is famous for its huge selection of seafood.

Located off the island's main road, Som Tam Kai Moon serves up northern Thai cuisine, primarily featuring dishes like Kai Moon spit-roasted chicken and Som Tam papaya salad.

Also interesting are restaurants with traditional Thai cuisine: Sangtawan, Pattama’s and Paddy’s Palms.

Klong Prao Beach Restaurants

In the heart of Klong Prao Beach, in a lagoon with magnificent views is the Blue Lagoon Restaurant. Mostly seafood dishes are offered here.

Also in the central part of the beach is the Kati Culinary restaurant. It serves classic Thai cuisine such as Tom Yum and Phat Thai.

In the south of Klong Prao there is a restaurant with the largest selection of seafood on the entire beach - Hua Pla Mor Fai. There is also a seafood buffet.

If you are tired of Thai cuisine, there is a restaurant of Russian cuisine, E-moe, on Klong Prao. Dumplings, borscht, solyanka - all this for tourists who miss their homeland.

Also worthy of tourist attention are the restaurants Ruang Kao, Chokdee, Bom and Tom and the very budget restaurant Iyara Food Center with an average price per dish of 50 baht.

Chai Chet Restaurants

The Palm Beach Restaurant is a secluded, romantic spot with a wide wine list and excellent seafood dishes. Located on the southern shore of Chai Chet.

Next to Palm Beach is the beach restaurant Lay lay Tong. The cuisine is represented by Thai, European cuisine and seafood dishes.

There is also a Russian restaurant in Chai Chet called Beryozka. The restaurant menu includes Olivier, okroshka, and pies.

Lonely Beach Restaurants

The Baan Mai restaurant, located near the main road of Lonely Beach, is famous not only for its Thai cuisine at affordable prices, but also for its vegetarian menu.

Bar-restaurant Stone Free, small in size, but very cozy. Thai and international cuisine at reasonable prices.

Rolling Chang Restaurant is located in the heart of Lonely Beach. Eastern Thai dishes are widely represented here.

Kai Bae Beach Restaurants

Friend Sea Food, located along the main road, offers the widest selection of seafood in Kai Bai, such as squid, tiger prawns and lobster for 250 baht. In addition to Thai, there is also European cuisine, the prices are also not scary.

Next door to Tesco Lotus is the Took Ks Ta Tai Moon restaurant. In addition to delicious food and large portions, it attracts tourists with its nightly fire shows.

Everyone has long known about the markets of Thailand that you can eat cheaply here. Koh Chang also has markets. There are not as many of them as in Pattaya, but the prices and range are approximately the same. As soon as we find out that there is a night market on the island, we visit it on the very first evening, and the subsequent ones too.

Market on Koh Chang, White Sand Beach

After all, it is at such markets that you are absolutely sure of the quality and freshness of the products. Well, the prices for all dishes cannot but make you happy. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether you live in a hostel, guesthouse, even in a five-star hotel. Everyone comes to the night market on Koh Chang.

Prices at Koh Chang night market

The most popular night market is located on. The same standard selection of kebabs, rice, seafood and sweets. To make it more clear, we took a photo where you can see the prices.

Exchange rate: 1$ = 33 Thai baht

Kebabs cost the same as in Pattaya

The women at the markets are as always welcoming and friendly. Although you can't tell from this photo

Salted fish, grilled tuna. All this costs 120-140 baht per fish

A stick with medium-sized shrimp - 100 baht. I fill myself with one stick + rice or potatoes

Crabs for 350 baht

Sliced fruits cost 20-30 baht. Here prices are not raised at all for tourists

Where can I order a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience In this article.

We eat pancakes with banana every day. This guy cooks pancake very quickly and professionally. The technology for making pancakes is different here. If in Bangok, Phuket and Pattaya you order a pancake with banana, then to make it soft and not crispy, they put an egg in it. This makes the pancake much tastier! On Koh Chang and other islands of Thailand, this option costs extra (+10 baht) and must be discussed in advance. Pancake with egg and banana costs 50 baht. Without it 40.

And when you get tired of taking rice and pad thai every day, find an aunty, the only one in the market who cooks potatoes in foil on the grill with butter and salt. Very simple and very tasty. Costs 30 baht for a large potato.

Maybe the Khmers, of whom there are many on Koh Chang, told the Thai woman what Russian tourists prefer. After all, nowhere else in Thailand do they cook grilled potatoes. We loved this dish. In general, on Chang, at first I was very drawn to Sihanoukville.

Visiting information

  • Opening hours: Koh Chang Night Market is open every day from 17:00 to 22:00

Koh Chang Night Market on the map

New evening market on Koh Chang

Most recently, in early December, the grand opening of a new night market on White Sand took place. We visited it too. It is located near the Alina Grande Hotel & Resort, almost across the street from the main evening market.

So far everything looks much more modest than the already beloved market. People come here, albeit much less often, probably more out of curiosity. The assortment is small. We personally didn’t look for anything for ourselves and returned to our market for ready-made food.

The tents are half empty and mostly sell trinkets, and there is little food. Maybe over time the market will grow

Come, come from other beaches to Koh Chang's White Sand Beach Night Food Market. As you can see, the prices here are not inflated at all. You can eat deliciously and cheaply. For us, dinner for two costs approximately 150-200 baht. We buy kebabs, grilled shrimp, potatoes or rice and go to dinner in the room.
