What cannot be brought into Thailand. Thai customs - what can and cannot be imported into Thailand. Import restrictions into Thailand

Many tourists take a responsible approach to traveling to a foreign country and, during preparation, ask themselves about the rules of customs import and export. After all, violation of customs control rules can threaten serious consequences for a Russian. An attempt to smuggle narcotic substances entails the death penalty! Our article will tell you what can be imported and exported from Thailand, as well as existing restrictions and prohibitions.

Customs rules for importing into Thailand. What is not subject to state duty?

Upon arrival in the sunny country, each arrival is required to fill out an immigration card, providing basic information about himself. The card has two halves, travelers fill out one immediately, and the customs officer picks it up at the point of arrival, and the second will be required to be returned upon departure/departure from Thailand.

When crossing the border of a foreign country, most tourists use a simplified procedure for passing through the Green channel corridor, which indicates that they do not have prohibited goods and substances, or baggage in excess of the established norm. In most cases, tourists are not inspected, although sometimes customs officers may conduct a random check of your luggage, identifying prohibited items, or alcohol or cigarettes in quantities exceeding the permissible carriage limits.

The rules of customs control in Thailand are the same for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries.

Thus, without filling out a declaration and paying a state fee, personal belongings and equipment (camera, tablet, laptop, etc.), the total cost of which does not exceed 10,000 baht, are allowed to be imported into the territory of the state.

In this case, it is advisable to remove the equipment from the boxes in advance and remove the tags from the items so that customs officers do not suspect you of importing for commercial purposes.

If you are going to take things with you worth from 10 thousand to 80 thousand baht, then you will have to pay state duty for them in accordance with the rules of customs duties. You need to deposit this money on the day of entry into Thailand. If the cost of your items is more than 80 thousand baht, then they are already considered a commercial shipment and are sent to a customs warehouse for subsequent import clearance.

When filling out the declaration, you must indicate the cost of things as close to reality as possible. After all, if you greatly underestimate it to reduce the size of the state duty, then they may be left to find out the true price at customs.

Important! If you plan to not only import expensive things, but also export them later from a foreign country, then when filling out the papers, it is advisable to indicate their serial numbers so as not to subsequently pay an export duty.

The most common case of exceeding the limit may be the transportation of expensive equipment. However, each tourist can take one camera and one video camera with him on his trip. Even if they exceed the permissible value for import, customs officers are unlikely to find fault with you. A similar situation is possible when importing a laptop or tablet into the country. But only if customs officers are sure that this equipment is intended only for personal use.

In addition, you can bring 1 liter of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco per person into Thailand without paying a duty. The volume of imported perfume should not exceed 150 grams, and cologne - 300 grams.

On a note! Only adult citizens are allowed to transport drinks and cigarettes; children are not taken into account. In addition, if you are bringing 400 cigarettes for your husband and wife, then you need to place them separately - 200 pieces in different bags.

If you move to warmer climes for permanent residence, you are allowed to take household appliances and home furnishings with you. The main requirements are that you must prove the fact of the move and the use of these things for personal purposes. If you want to take a car or motorcycle with you, you will have to pay a state fee of up to 80% of the cost of the vehicle, which is extremely unprofitable for an immigrant from Russia.

Important! If you do not want to leave your pet alone and want to take it with you to Thailand, then customs rules do not prohibit this. But upon entry, you will have to show the staff a veterinary passport of the animal indicating the vaccinations received, including against rabies, as well as documents confirming the presence of an identification chip. Otherwise, your pet will be sent to quarantine.

Upon arrival in a foreign country, travelers should understand that customs officers simply do not have enough time to inspect everyone entering Thailand. However, they can always conduct random searches. And where is the guarantee that you won’t become such a “lucky” person? If, during the inspection of your luggage, customs officers find excess alcohol or cigarettes, they will probably also calculate the total cost of the items you are importing. And this check may threaten you with a fine in the amount of four times the cost of imported goods (up to $1,000). Therefore, when going on a trip, think twice - is it worth the risk or is it better to follow the rules of another state, and immediately declare items in the red zone whose value or volume exceeds the established limits.

What should you not bring to Thailand?

The list of restrictions and prohibitions on import into Thailand is quite extensive; many items are subject to mandatory licensing or certification. The reason for these bans is Thai legislation aimed at protecting national entrepreneurs producing the most popular goods, as well as producers of agricultural products.

The most important prohibition concerns narcotic drugs and medications equivalent to them in the country of entry. Punishment for them is provided up to the death penalty.

You need to be very careful when importing pills and other medications. For example , you cannot take Viagra or Corvalol, which is approved in Russia, with you, as it contains phenobarbital, which is prohibited in the state of entry. And for psychotropic substances containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which are prohibited in the country, you may face imprisonment for up to 5 years.

On a note! Thai pharmacies sell analogues of many of our domestic medicines, so you don’t have to take a home first aid kit with you.

You may also face serious punishment for attempting to smuggle weapons, ammunition, pyrotechnics and explosives without special permission from the Thai Consulate in Russia or the Thai Police Department, which must be obtained in advance.

A sentence of up to 5 years and/or a fine of four times the value of the goods is provided for the import of electronic cigarettes, the liquid of which, according to the Thai government, contains prohibited amphetamine. The second reason for the ban is the lack of taxation on the import of cigarettes. And even if you manage to carry them with you in your luggage, you should think twice before consuming them, because the fine for “smoking” such a cigarette is 20 thousand baht.

Despite the general permission to enter the country with pets, in this case there are also certain restrictions. They concern dogs - these are American Stafford and pit bull terriers. You will still have to leave these pets at home during the trip, due to their fighting qualities. In addition, it is prohibited to import rare plants and animal breeds into Thailand. According to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), the import and export of wild flora and fauna is possible only with the mandatory presentation of appropriate certificates.

The ban on importation into foreign countries also affected intimate goods, which also included literature, images and videos of a pornographic nature.

Special rules and restrictions apply to food products. For example, a special license is required to import oranges, onions, seafood, rice, eggs and dairy products. But you can take sausage, buckwheat and seeds with you. However, these products must be checked in as luggage.

It is prohibited to import counterfeit money and securities into Thailand; royal and official seals; gold in ingots and plates; unlicensed video and audio materials, pirated products; meat from countries with epidemics of spongiform encephalopathy, foot-and-mouth disease and mad cow disease; products with the image of the national flag of Thailand; products that violate intellectual property rights.

You can take a powerbank with you into the country. However, its capacity should not exceed 32,000 mah, and it can only be carried in hand luggage.

Also in Thailand, there are items whose circulation is limited due to the ban on their purchase and sale in the country. Problems may also arise with their import, despite the fact that there is no official ban on import/export. These items include: Buddha figurines larger than 13 cm, items made of ivory and sea turtle shells, shells, corals, unprocessed precious stones, dried seahorses, stuffed bats and crocodiles, items and body parts of tigers.

Bringing antiques or art into a foreign country requires a special permit issued by the Department of Fine Arts.

Thus, the list of goods subject to licensing for import/export from Thailand is represented by approximately 50 classes of items. Due to the fact that it is constantly changing, the latest information can be found on the website of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand.

Information on the possibility of importing certain goods into the territory of the state can also be obtained on the website http://www.customs.go.th.

How much cash can you bring into Thailand? What amounts must be declared?

Many travelers take bank cards with them on their trips, from which they withdraw cash in the destination country, or pay with them directly when making purchases. You can have an unlimited amount of funds on such a card.

However, if you prefer to take cash with you, then you need to study the rules for importing currency into your destination country. Thus, it is allowed to import into Thailand 20,000 dollars or other currency in this equivalent without a declaration procedure. The limit on the import of local money is set at 2,000 baht.

If you arrive at Bangkok airport with a large amount of cash to be processed, you will initially need to follow the arrows and signs to border control. After passing it, on the left, behind the belts with arriving luggage, before descending to the lower floors and exiting to the city, you will see the Red channel. There you can declare your amount.

According to Thai customs regulations, you will have to fill out a Foreign Currency Declaration Form and inform the customs officer in writing about the banknotes, coins, traveler's checks and securities you intend to bring into the country. In most cases, employees do not ask travelers to present the declared funds and simply certify the customs card with a red seal. This procedure takes no more than 15 minutes.

When leaving the country, if you have more than $20,000 left, you will have to declare it again. This procedure will also need to be completed when exporting local currency in the amount of more than 50 thousand baht. In addition, there are restrictions on the export of Thai currency to neighboring Asian countries (Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia). The maximum allowable limit is 500 thousand baht.

Some people may have a question - why declare currency when entering Thailand? And is it necessary to do this? Moreover, data on filling out a declaration indicating the amount is received by the tax authorities, in connection with which unscrupulous compatriots may need to provide an explanation about the sources of origin of these funds and pay taxes on them. And the reason is that declaration is required by the Thai authorities in order to control the influx of capital into the country and prevent fraudulent schemes. Thus, when opening an account or deposit in a bank, purchasing real estate in the country or making an investment in a business, a foreigner will need to confirm the nature of the funds, or more precisely, the fact that they were imported into Thailand.

Prohibited for export from Thailand

The list of items prohibited for export from a foreign country is almost identical to the list of import bans. These include:

  • narcotic and psychotropic substances;
  • counterfeit banknotes and coins, gold bars, official seals;
  • objects and images of an erotic nature;
  • weapons, ammunition, pyrotechnics;
  • raw corals, seahorses and mollusk shells (only souvenirs made from them are allowed to be exported);
  • ivory and products made from it;
  • religious images and statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas over 13 cm, begging bowls;
  • earth and sand, including ornamental plants in pots;
  • turtles and products made from their shells;
  • items depicting the national flag;
  • skins and bones of tigers, leopards, as well as products made from them;
  • materials that violate intellectual property rights;
  • stuffed crocodiles, except for finished products made from them (belts, wallets, bags, shoes).

You will not have any problems at customs when exporting snake and stingray products, unless it is a small wholesale batch. You can also legally take souvenirs with dried insects (butterflies, beetles and spiders) with you as a souvenir.

Additionally, the list of prohibited items includes uncut (uncut) gemstones and platinum jewelry. Jewelry and cut gemstones purchased in the land of smiles are allowed to be exported from Thailand, but only with a purchase receipt and a corresponding certificate for the jewelry. These products are subject to mandatory declaration at customs.

Certain restrictions affected works of art, antiques, archaeological treasures and antiques. To export them outside of Thailand, you need a license from the Department of Fine Arts. To obtain a special permit, you will need to present a minimum of documents: two photos of your valuables and a copy of your passport.

Also, in accordance with the customs rules of Thailand, it is prohibited to export representatives of endangered animals and rare plant species from the state. You will need special permits when exporting plants and their parts capable of growing. In this regard, the easiest way to take home from a foreign tour are orchids that are sold without roots.

Export of fruits from Thailand

Good news for many travelers will be permission to export fruit from the sunny country. After all, most tourists want to bring with them an exotic gift from Thailand to please and treat their family and friends.

You are allowed to take almost any fruit with you in unlimited quantities. They can be packed either in luggage, subject to weight standards, or in hand luggage, placing them in a special plastic basket (sold everywhere).

Export restrictions affected only three fruits:

  1. Durian. The reason for the ban was its specific smell. The unpleasant aroma of this fruit spreads very quickly throughout the room (an airplane or its luggage compartment) and is particularly persistent. If you really want to take it out, you can take the fruit with you in dried form, or in the form of candies or chips. In addition, some tourists resort to a trick by sealing it in their luggage in cling film, which does not allow the smell to pass through.
  2. Coconut. This fruit is prohibited for export from the country due to the shell being too dense, which cannot be scanned at customs control.
  3. Watermelon. Since pressure changes often occur on board an airplane during a flight, the berry may explode.

On a note! When buying fruits for home, you need to take unripe fruits, otherwise there is a high chance that they will spoil before reaching their destination.

Important! In addition, if during your holiday abroad you bought jewelry, electronics, works of art, branded clothing, shoes and other things worth more than 5,000 baht, then at the airport of departure in a special window you can get a VAT refund in the amount 7% of the cost of purchased goods. To do this, you will need to present the purchase along with a special Vat refund receipt and fill out a return application.

Violating Thailand's customs regulations can result in a traveler being fined four times the value of the prohibited items, imprisonment for up to 10 years, and even the death penalty. Therefore, we advise you to comply with the laws of a foreign power, not to “play with fire” and not to try to bring prohibited items across the border, so as not to spoil your holiday in this beautiful country.

Exist customs restrictions. The Thai government is by far the harshest. This country still has the death penalty for drug trafficking. How to export Thai fruits?

Exotic Thai fruits are one of the best gifts for relatives and friends after a holiday in Thailand. If you decide to bring fruits with you from a paradise country, you should take care of their proper packaging and familiarize yourself with the following customs rules.

In Thailand there is no limit on the amount of fruit exported. The main thing is that the total weight of your luggage does not exceed the permissible limit.

It is prohibited to export durian from Thailand due to its specific smell. This fruit should not be checked in as luggage or taken on board the plane. In the first case, your personal belongings may suffer from the unpleasant odor; in the second, all passengers on the plane may suffer. The aroma of durian is persistent and quickly spreads throughout any room. Therefore, we recommend taking home sweets, pasta, and durian chips instead of fresh fruits.

Also prohibited for export are watermelons, which can explode on board due to pressure drop, and coconuts due to their thick rind, which is not visible through the scanner at customs control.

Fruits can be either checked in or carried in hand luggage. In order for your valuable tropical cargo to reach its destination safe and sound, you should not buy overripe fruits, which will have time to deteriorate during the flight.

A special plastic container, which can be purchased at any large supermarket or market, will help protect fruits from damage during transportation. Such a container can either be placed in a suitcase, checked separately as luggage, or taken with you into the aircraft cabin (if the dimensions of the container do not exceed those allowed for hand luggage). However, to avoid fruits being seized at customs in Russia, it is better to take them in hand luggage or put a basket in a suitcase.

There are examples of how travelers manage to violate Thai customs rules with impunity. Still, we recommend that you adhere to the established rules so that your holiday in the land of smiles is not overshadowed by unpleasant incidents at the airport.

Good cigarettes in Thailand They're not cheap. And by our standards, good Thai cigarettes are at the level of Russian budget tobacco products. Therefore, smokers who have already been on vacation or are sure to take up to a carton of cigarettes with them so that they don’t have to buy local ones. You shouldn’t count on Duty Free, you can buy good cigarettes there, but they only give you the purchase upon departure, not before.

Thai tobacco companies put creepy photographs of the consequences of smoking on cigarette packs, which you can see (not for the faint of heart).

Average price of cigarettes in Thailand is the same everywhere, as is the place of production. Tobacco products are being brought from Malaysia. As for the price tag, a pack of so many high-quality cigarettes in retail outlets of the 7-Eleven supermarket chain costs from 110 baht. There are options for 35-45 baht, but they are of such low quality that even local residents rarely smoke them. By the way, cigars in the country are also, as a rule, counterfeit, so it’s worth bringing them with you. By the way, they themselves try not to buy cigars, knowing about their dubious quality.

Rules for importing cigarettes into Thailand

They are allowed to import no more than 200 cigarettes (or 1 block) duty-free for each adult entrant, if more - a fine of up to 5,000 baht.

It should be remembered that if you and your wife, friend, brother-in-law... no matter who, carry one carton of cigarettes each, then they must be in different bags, otherwise the customs officers will decide that the cigarettes are carried by one person and will impose a fine of up to 10,000 baht!

So you don't have to try thai cigarettes, you can agree in advance with non-smoking travel companions that they will carry a few extra packs for you in their luggage, but it is better to hand them back to the owner away from the eyes of customs officers. If you are caught doing this, you will be subject to a fine of up to 10,000 baht.

You should not try to import cigarettes in excess of the norm on your own. At best, you will be asked to get rid of excess cargo, at worst, you will be asked to pay a fine. Both options cannot be considered a good start to your stay in the country. It is better to make do with a small supply or agree to smoke local cigarettes.

Smoking restrictions in Thailand

More than ten years smoking in Thailand actively prohibited. Various restrictions and rules are constantly being developed for smokers. Thus, special zones are created for smokers, and for walking down the street with a cigarette in your mouth you can be fined up to 2,500 baht. However, practice shows that the Thais are in no hurry to disappoint tourists in their hospitality and issue fines only to obvious violators who light up in places not intended for this (shops, schools, hotel rooms and lounges). You shouldn’t ask for an ashtray in closed restaurants either; you will be asked to go outside to smoke.

Many people are interested is it possible to smoke in thailand in hotels. In the majority, alas, no. There are separate smoking areas on hotel premises, and there is a fine for smoking in rooms and on balconies. Only tourists often break this rule, smoking on balconies and even in rooms, but the Thais try to treat this with understanding and rarely resort to punishment. They are especially loyal to heavy smokers in mid-price hotels; it even happens that there are simply no smoking areas in such hotels.

Seeing how much do cigarettes cost in Thailand, some will want to take home more packs of exotic tobacco products. But it will only be good for souvenirs; few people would even think of smoking it. But keep in mind that more than two blocks of local cigarettes, regardless of the price category, are not available for export.

Attention! Since November 1, 2017, the Thai government has banned smoking on the beaches of all resort destinations. Now it will be possible to “smoke” only in specially designated areas near the entrance to the beach. Violation of the law is punishable by a fine of up to 100 thousand baht. Smoking will also soon be prohibited on boats.

A little trick for the smoking tourist

For those who want to smoke a cigarette, always keep a pack of Thai cigarettes in your pocket. Often situations with a lack of cigarettes arise during excursions, especially sea excursions. And then a spare pack will come in handy, from which you will have to treat the “beggars.” By the way, a situation may arise when a reserve pack of not very good cigarettes will be useful for personal replenishment of the lack of nicotine in the body.

Anti-tobacco law in Thailand

Everyone knows that smoking leads to lung cancer and other well-known diseases, but this stops few people. Even the frightening inscriptions on packs of Russian-style cigarettes do not stop him. This is probably why tobacco companies are obliged to put terrible photos of the consequences of smoking on their products. The spectacle turned out not for the faint of heart, but the effectiveness of this idea has increased significantly. Under the article we have placed photos of examples of such a solution, for natural reasons, enclosing them under a spoiler.

Changes to Thailand's anti-tobacco law in 2017

The National Legislative Assembly passed a bill in 2017 that increases the ban on the minimum age for selling cigarettes from 18 to 20 years. It is also prohibited to sell them individually. Violators face up to 3 years and/or a fine of up to 40,000 baht.

In addition, the law prohibits the production and sale of tobacco products for import, the packages of which contain less than 20 cigarettes. Violators face a fine of up to 300,000 baht.

Therefore, if the value or volume of your goods exceeds the restrictions, you must declare your luggage. To do this, go to the red zone and declare the goods.

Regarding the import of products to Thailand. Thais turn a blind eye to the transportation of sausages, seeds and buckwheat. However, you can always be suspected of commercial transportation of goods (the amount should not exceed 10,000 baht()). You should also not carry food in your hand luggage.

About importing medicines into Thailand

Thailand has very strict legislation and many drugs that are not narcotic in our country are recognized as such. As an example, we can cite the familiar Corvalol. This drug is prohibited for import into Thailand due to its phenobarbital content.
There are two divisions of illegal drugs in the country: narcotic and psychotropic.
Here is the official list of prohibited drugs that cannot be imported into Thailand without documents.
