When the long-awaited vacation is just around the corner, and plane tickets to “that same dream country” have been purchased, there are still many questions and pleasant worries associated with both the flight and the vacation itself. Today we want to cover in detail the topic of check-in for a flight - why it is needed, how to go through it quickly and calmly, what check-in methods are there and which one is better to choose. Let's discuss possible pitfalls and life hacks, give a few examples and put all the dots on how it happens.

Purpose of registration

Many people wonder, what exactly is the purpose of checking in for a plane flight? The ticket has already been purchased, the system has saved your personal data, go to passport control, and that’s it. Let's try to explain. Because the the departure of each flight is a planned and clearly verified event, delays create consequences.

There are time limits for aircraft maintenance at the airport. Violation of them leads to a delay in departure, which is fraught with loss of queue on the runway and a long wait for a new free “window”. In conditions where some passengers are about to make a transfer, while others have already planned important matters and meetings at the destination (city), such a wait can result in serious problems.

To ensure that the plane departs from the airport exactly on schedule, the flight is checked in advance passenger check-in(check-in), which ends 40-60 minutes before departure. After that, airline and airport employees have at their disposal enough free time to solve almost all unforeseen situations that, one way or another, always arise when the organizational process is associated with checking documents and baggage, going through customs and security control.

Ways to check-in for an airplane flight

There are two main ways to register a passenger:

The fundamental difference between these two methods is that when registering at the airport building, you must be physically present; no one can register for you, but with electronic (online) registration, you can do this remotely, in a place convenient for you. You can even ask someone to check in online for you, providing that person with the necessary details about your flight.

Our goal is to provide you with complete and comprehensive information about the check-in process. Therefore, we will first of all look at the methods, their differences and tell you how you can go through it in the most comfortable way.

Baggage check-in

According to the rules, the passenger has the right to take on board the plane only a small bag, which is called hand luggage. If you also have a suitcase, it must be checked in and placed in the cargo hold. Baggage check-in (unlike passenger check-in) is formal and takes literally a couple of minutes. The term “registration” itself is only nominally applicable to the suitcase, this is necessary in order to identify it in case of problems.

After check-in, the suitcase is classified as checked baggage, they put a luggage tag on it and hand it over to the cargo compartment. The passenger will be able to receive it only upon arrival at their destination. Read more about baggage allowance here, but in this article we will only talk about the options for checking it in and checking it into the baggage compartment of the plane.

Standard begins 24 hours before departure, and ends in 40–60 minutes, so be careful if you plan to arrive at the airport “back to back”. Each airline sets its own exact time frame.

Many people are interested in whether there is a fundamental difference between checking in for a flight through an application and on the official website of the airline. Answer: There are no important differences. Minor ones appear if you collect bonuses/miles/points from a certain company, since they are accumulated only by registered users, and thanks to the application you always have at your fingertips up-to-date information about the status of your bonus account, possible privileges, discounts and promotions. From any gadget, be it a phone or a tablet, you are taken to an intuitive menu where you do not need to search for information through a browser. Otherwise, the procedure is identical, and if you are not interested in bonuses, then there is no difference in how you check in online for your flight (through the application or on the official website).

After the system message has confirmed to you that online check-in for the flight was successful, you receive electronic boarding pass(English: e-boarding pass or mobile boarding pass), which contains all the information about the upcoming flight. It can come in the form of a QR code, a file with the extension .pkpass or in PDF format. From now on, the electronic boarding pass - the only document, which confirms your right to fly as a passenger (an airplane ticket is not such). For this reason, during pre-flight registration (in the airport building), the document will need to be demonstrated at least 2-3 times.

Printing an electronic boarding pass

The rules of most (but not all) airlines state that a passenger must undergo pre-flight clearance at the airport building (baggage drop-off, passport and customs controls, boarding) only on the basis of a printed version of the electronic boarding pass. You can print the pass in advance on a regular printer (on a sheet of A4 paper), or directly in the airport building at the check-in counter or at a self-check-in kiosk (terminal). Even in cases where there is no need to print the coupon, it is safer to always have a paper version on hand.

Who is not entitled to undergo electronic (online) registration:

  • Passengers of a special category. These are people with serious illnesses or with medical equipment due to health reasons; children flying unaccompanied by adults, as well as people with disabilities.
  • Passengers traveling with animals, since before check-in you need to undergo additional veterinary control and pay for the transportation of the animal.
  • Passengers carrying special or dangerous cargo - since additional inspections and verification of permits are carried out.
  • Passengers who purchased tickets through travel agencies. Yes, unfortunately, travel agencies do not sell tickets directly from the company, often adding their own percentage, and the ticket itself is issued in paper form, so you won’t be able to check in for a plane flight online.
  • When ordering air tickets for a group (more than 9 people).

Who should not use online registration?

If you are not a confident user of modern gadgets, and the very concept of “application” makes you mistrustful, the best and easiest way for you to get a boarding pass is to register with an airport employee. All you need to do is provide your passport and ticket, then the work will be done by professionals. It is to them at the reception desk that you should ask all your questions. Don't hesitate to ask for help, it's their responsibility.

How to check in checked baggage during electronic (online) check-in

When checking in electronically for a flight, a question often arises regarding the check-in of checked baggage into the cargo compartment of the aircraft. There are several options:

Check-in for a flight at the airport building

When checking in for a flight directly at the airport, you need to choose the optimal and appropriate method. This can be registration with the help of or directly with airport representatives.

What is the most convenient way to check in for a flight?

The question is not easy, since there is a group of people who are simply more accustomed and/or more convenient to check in the old traditional way on , as they have done for many years, but there are several undeniable advantages to the flight:

  • You save time, which you can spend on coffee, shopping, or just check out a little later, without fear of losing an extra half hour or even hours in the check-in line.
  • You can choose your favorite one yourself place on board, and not ask the airport employee to “give me a seat at the window.”
  • You automatically become a passenger, despite possible overbooking, which is especially important for tourist destinations during the season.
  • You save your nerves and those of those around you, because few people enjoy pushing in line and waiting agonizingly in a crowd.

What is the difference between check-in on international flights and domestic flights?

It would seem that there is no difference here, because in both cases there is a departure from a certain airport, there is a destination, you also need to check in, choosing a convenient method, check in your luggage and go through the security check area. So what are the differences? First of all, some countries have introduced bans and/or restrictions on the carriage of large portable equipment, which is not the case on domestic flights. As a rule, domestic flights depart from another terminal or wing of the airport. When flying domestically, you will not have to go through passport control, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the registration procedure, but please note that in the Duty Free zone only national currency and cards are accepted for payment; you will not be able to pay in euros/dollars, as for international flights!

Check-in at the airport for domestic flights usually begins 1.5 hours before departure and ends 30–40 minutes, depending on the airline’s internal rules. Online check-in, as on international flights, opens one day before departure (sometimes earlier).

Low-cost airlines. The difference and subtleties of registration

Low-cost airlines are low-cost airlines that offer tickets to popular destinations at fairly low prices. Reducing the cost of a flight is achieved by saving on costs and reducing the level of service. The business model of low-cost airlines is based on additional services, which are always provided for a fee. Therefore, electronic (online) check-in at low-cost airlines is free, but at the airport it becomes a paid service. You will also have to pay for printing your boarding pass (at the check-in counter) and for choosing a seat on board the plane (during check-in), and for the right to take checked baggage.

Additional airline services

As we have already said, when checking in for a flight (regardless of the method), you can order additional services that will be provided on board or after arrival. Most of them are paid, only some are free. Here is an approximate list of additional services (you can see the full list, as well as the cost of a particular service on the airline’s official website):

  • choosing and booking your favorite seat on board the aircraft;
  • menu to choose from: meat, fish, vegetarian, halal, dietary;
  • a seat with a baby cot if you are traveling with a small child;
  • wheelchair for people with disabilities;
  • meeting at the airport, transfer, hotel reservation;
  • accompanying a child if he is flying alone;
  • service upgrade;
  • additional drinks;
  • extra luggage;
  • fresh press;
  • WI-FI;

There are also a number of non-standard additional services, for example, airBaltic offers the “accurate arrival guarantee” service (10 euros).

Cancellation of registration

Unfortunately, sometimes it happens that registration has to be canceled urgently. You can cancel your check-in until it is closed (that is, on average, no later than 30–40 minutes before boarding). You can do this through the application or on the website by going to your reservation and canceling it (if it supports this function), or directly from an airport employee.

If you wish to receive any portion of your ticket purchase as cash compensation, you will be required to fill out an application detailing the situation that caused you to cancel your registration. Many airlines, in the event of force majeure (injury, hospital, accident), compensate up to 70 percent of the ticket price, but you must have all the statements and certificates in your hands, which you will then provide as a basis for compensation. If you are simply late for your flight, then even if you cancel (remotely) check-in, you will not have to count on a refund. If you fly with a low-cost airline, then such airlines, in principle, do not provide any compensation, and tickets are non-refundable.

So why is it best at the moment how to go through electronic check-in for a plane and what is it even? Let's look at each of the questions in more detail.

What is a boarding pass?

First, you need to define what a boarding pass is and how it differs from an electronic ticket.

First of all, an electronic ticket is an itinerary receipt, which is not an official document with legal force. This means that in order to get on board the plane, it will not be enough to just buy a ticket. You will also need to obtain a boarding pass. What must be included in it?

  • Full name of the passenger;
  • departure time;
  • departure date;
  • place number;
  • number of the terminal where boarding will take place;
  • the number of the airport where the plane is heading.

Why choose electronic registration?

It is not surprising that such a service is in such great demand, because it has a number of undeniable advantages. Here are just a few of them:

When does electronic registration become impossible?

However, there are a number of exceptions, When it is not possible to register online:

Features of electronic registration

The process of registering electronically for a flight is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance. For everything to go well, you just need to follow a certain sequence. So How can you do online check-in for a plane yourself?

  1. First you need to buy a ticket, as the reservation number will be indicated along with it.
  2. In addition, you should ask the airline how much time is given to complete electronic check-in. As a rule, for most air carriers it opens in 24 hours and closes in 45 minutes. But it’s better to clarify this information in advance, as the rules may differ.
  3. Then you need to go to the website of your airline on which the passenger is flying. There you need to find the “registration” section, indicate your last name and first name (in Latin), as they are written in your passport, as well as your reservation number or ticket number.
  4. After the corresponding window opens, you will need to check whether the flight details are correct, and you will also need to enter your passport information.
  5. At this stage you can choose a location. Do not be upset if it suddenly turns out that you have already been assigned a certain seat - this is a feature of the work of some airlines. You can always easily change it, just click the “Change” button and make a choice yourself.
  6. After completing online check-in, your completed boarding pass will be sent to your email. You can print it either at home on a printer or directly at the airport.

If you constantly use the services of the same airline, then you can install its application on your mobile phone, then the whole process of obtaining a boarding pass will become easier and faster. As a result, a QR code will be provided, which will simply be applied to the airport scanner and you will receive a paper boarding pass.

In addition, many airports now have special kiosks where each passenger can independently check in for their flight. There you can also print your boarding pass.

The main thing to remember is that If you are flying with luggage, you will still have to check it in. To do this, at the airport you will need to go to a special counter on which “Drop Off” will be written. It is specifically intended for passengers who have checked in for the flight independently. As a rule, there is no queue here, and the whole procedure will take a little time. When you fly only with, you do not need to register it separately.

If there are still concerns that the online registration was not completed or there are some errors, then everything can be easily checked. Firstly, you can always call the support service of the airline from which you purchased the ticket. Secondly, you can go to your personal account on the airline’s website, where all information about the flight will be provided.

Of course, it is up to everyone to decide how to check in for a plane - whether the old-fashioned way, at the airport, standing in a general queue, or use the modern option via the Internet. But if a person values his time, then You won’t find a better online check-in for a plane. It is only important to follow all the recommendations correctly and not be afraid of anything!

Before your flight, it is very important to clarify all the nuances regarding your departure. First, you need to find out from the carrier how check-in is carried out, what things can be taken and what cannot, rules of conduct on board, etc. You need to know these rules so that no problems arise at the airport.

Everyone who intends to fly by plane is interested in how to check luggage at the airport. Along with this, passengers are concerned about where to check their luggage at the airport in order to complete this procedure on time. Let's look at how and where to check in your suitcases before boarding.

Baggage acceptance by airport employee

An air traveler needs to know everything about baggage check-in in order to successfully board the plane. Each baggage is marked with a tag and transported in a special compartment located on the plane. If you decide to check your bags at the airport, then you need to go where there are check-in counters and baggage drop-off points. They open 2-3 hours before departure. Those who are interested in the question of how many hours before you can check in your luggage at the airport should know that this can be done within 2-3 hours, but most importantly, no later than 40 minutes before departure. Since there are usually a lot of people, it is advisable to arrive at the airport as early as possible.

Modern air harbors are equipped with automatic baggage acceptance. To check in their belongings, passengers need to go to special machines that automatically accept luggage. They are very easy to use:

  1. First, you need to place your bags on the belt and present your boarding pass to the reader.
  2. Next, flight information will appear on the display, which you need to carefully read and check.
  3. If everything is correct, the machine will issue a tag that needs to be stuck on your luggage.
  4. If you stick it correctly (on the handle of the suitcase), the machine will let your luggage through. If the bags are too heavy, then you will have to pay for the excess without leaving the machine. However, for this you need a bank card with money in your account.

You can also check your luggage at the kiosk Self-tag. They are no different from ordinary ones. The only thing is that they give you a tag instead of a coupon. It must be attached to the handle and brought to the counter Drop-off.

Many people wonder: how does baggage drop off at the airport after electronic check-in? Drop-off stands are designed specifically for this. Here you just need to place your luggage on the belt and the machine will print a tag. If the weight exceeds the norm, you will have to pay for the excess via a bank card. If there is no such machine, and you checked in for your flight online, then you need to contact the staff at the check-in counter to check in your baggage. As a rule, those who registered independently can go through this procedure without waiting in line.

Tag according to which the luggage is sent

You need to know that the fact that the passenger checked in his luggage is verified using a tag that must be glued to the handle of his suitcase. Some people are wondering: is it possible to check in luggage at the airport in advance? Of course you can. The main thing is to do this no earlier than on the day of departure, and no later than 40 minutes before the end of registration.

What should be the weight and dimensions of luggage?

Everyone knows that airlines set the permissible weight and dimensions of transported suitcases. However, initially there are baggage allowances, and carriers only add their own adjustments. So, you are allowed to carry suitcases for free only with the following weight:

  1. In economy class, a maximum of 20 kg is allowed per passenger.
  2. In business class, no more than 30 kg per air traveler.
  3. For a child under 2 years old – up to 10 kg.
  4. For those who participate in the promotion, the established weight can be increased by 10 kg.

It is worth understanding that the weight system only limits the weight, but not the number of seats, that is you have the right to take with you 2 suitcases of 10 kg each. This system also allows you to combine the luggage of several people whose seats are nearby.

Each kilogram in excess of the norm is paid according to the established tariffs. Some carriers consider it normal to exceed the norm by 2-3 kg, while others demand payment. The cost of overweight is determined directly by the carrier. That is why, before purchasing an air ticket, it is necessary to clarify what weight of luggage is permissible, as well as the tariffs for excess payment. The specific amount can be found on the official website of the airline. So, excess baggage is paid on average like this:

  • for each kilogram exceeded, 1.5% of the tariff cost is charged;
  • each company personally determines what amount this will be, but generally they do not pay for the excess more than 15 euros(per 1 kg).

The dimensions of the suitcase also matter. You also have to pay for exceeding them. Please note that the length, width and height cannot be more than 158 cm. The price for oversized luggage is also determined by the carrier.

How to transport oversized luggage?

Many passengers know that if the luggage is not the right size, it can be checked in as oversized. This baggage includes items such as sports equipment and equipment, musical instruments, household appliances (microwave oven, multicooker, tape recorder), and other items weighing up to 32 kg. If you agree in advance with airline representatives on the transportation of such items, you will not have to pay an additional fee. All you have to do is call the support hotline and find out all your questions.

You need to know that such things can only be transported if the aircraft is equipped with loading hatches and space for such cargo. Please note that you rarely have to pay for oversized luggage. Almost always you also have to pay for it, but at lower rates. The only thing is that the fee is never charged to skiers who carry sports equipment (skis, clubs, etc.).

Do not forget to additionally wrap your luggage so that it is not accidentally damaged during loading or unloading.

Transportation of fragile luggage

Passengers often take fragile items on board with them, for example, expensive sets, crystal items, etc. In order for such luggage to be delivered safe and sound, it is necessary to indicate this data during check-in. It is also important to pack fragile items well, since there is no guarantee that movers will not break them when carrying them. However, they will not be held liable for damage. It is better to try not to carry such things on the plane, as it is very risky.

If you are wondering what are acceptable and prohibited items to carry on an airplane, check with the carrier, as everyone has different requirements. The only thing is that there are generally accepted norms regarding prohibited things. These include: weapons, explosives, chemicals, toxins, radioactive materials, liquefied or compressed gases, toxic substances, flammable substances, sharp and cutting objects, as well as any other items that pose a potential danger. A passenger with such items will not be allowed on board, and if he is transporting weapons or explosives, he may be detained until the circumstances are clarified.

In order for the flight to be successful, you need to carefully prepare for it, clarify all the nuances of interest, as well as the features of check-in, baggage transportation, etc. With a responsible approach to preparation, your flight will be successful, and the trip will remain in your memory for a long time.

There are 3 types of check-in for flights: online check-in, check-in at the airport counter, and self-check-in at the airport at kiosks. What do you need to know about each type of registration?

Check-in at the airport counter

On most airlines, check-in ends 40 minutes before the plane departs, and check-in starts 2-3 hours before. There is a separate counter for business class. In a rare case, if it is not there, you can go to the “stranger” without a queue.

The passenger presents a ticket, passport, and, if necessary, the following documents:

  • International passport.
  • Departure visa.
  • Insurance.
  • In case of transfer - itinerary receipt.
  • Documents for children (if you are flying with them), which are required by a specific air carrier.

Have scanned copies of documents; it is also advisable to have copies in email so that you can print them if necessary.

Baggage, except hand luggage, must be checked in. For weight over 20 kg per person you will need to pay extra. You will receive a luggage tag. Next you go through customs and passport control and a metal detector frame.

This completes the registration process. You go to the waiting room.

Online check-in

The advantages of such registration:

  1. There is no need to go to the airport in advance and stand in line;
  2. You can choose your seat on the plane.

To register online, you need Internet access and an electronic ticket (to identify the passenger). You will need:

  1. Indicate the name or credit card number through which the ticket was paid for;
  2. Confirm flight data;
  3. Generate a boarding pass.

As a result, you receive a PIN code. If the boarding pass must have a magnetic stripe, thanks to the PIN code, you can print it at the airport on a special device. If a magnetic stripe is not needed, the coupon can be printed on any printer.

This coupon must be presented:

  1. At the reception;
  2. When checking in baggage;
  3. Security service (if the flight is international).

To successfully use online check-in, you need to know when it ends at a particular air carrier. Typically, you can issue and receive a boarding pass around the clock: starts 24 hours before the flight, ends 45 minutes.

Who cannot register online:

  1. Disabled people;
  2. Persons transporting animals;
  3. Groups of over 9 people;
  4. Those who are not flying on a regular flight;
  5. Children flying unaccompanied by their parents.

Self-check-in kiosks at the airport

They appeared in 1998 and have been operating en masse since 2005. With a credit or bonus card you can:

  • register yourself;
  • make changes to registration information;
  • choose a seat on the plane;
  • obtain boarding passes if there are transfers;
  • quickly check in your luggage.

The kiosks are located in the departure lounges and all have touch screens. The sequence of working with them:

  1. Select an airline;
  2. Identify personal data;
  3. Choose a seat on the plane;
  4. Confirm registration;
  5. Print your boarding pass.

Some kiosks do not have a baggage check-in system. In this case, it is issued at the Baggage Drop Of counter. Only e-ticket holders can use the self-check-in counter.

If the kiosk is equipped with a special baggage check-in system, the passenger will be able to check it in independently.

What to do if you are late for registration

If the plane has not yet taken off, you can get on it. During the period when there are 40-25 minutes left before departure, approach the employee at the check-in counter for late passengers. If there is no such counter at the airport, you need to contact the employees of the airline you are flying on. They will help you get on board the plane.

To take your seat on the plane, you need to check in for the flight.

You can do this in two ways:
