Let's move from the north to the south of Israel, and go to... the glorious city of Kiryat Gat. If you thought that Ramla, Tiberias or Safed were darkness, then Kiryat Gat, as they say in English, is “a league in itself.” There's nothing here at all. If the above-mentioned cities have some kind of ancient history, and their glory simply faded away at some point, then Kiryat Gat, it seems, was built and successfully abandoned (I wanted to forget to write, but sometimes there is some truth in typos). Some kind of creepy monument to the victims of the Holocaust, two falafel stalls (and at quite Tel Aviv prices), supposedly the main street... It all looks so small-town, provincial and creepy that you want to immediately run away, in no case looking back .

It all started, in fact, very positively. Having visited Beit Guvrin National Park (I don’t know whether to write about it or not, since it has already been written and rewritten a thousand times), we decided to stop somewhere for lunch. We actually stopped in Kiryat Gat and were tempted by the following sign.

We are incredibly lucky. I must say that there were the most delicious pasties, samosas and manti that I have eaten in my life, and, of course, for some absolute meager money. I still remember this and am upset, because I understand that I will return to Kiryat Gat only under threat of death, and I would not refuse to eat in this place again. In general, it later turned out that this was the most and only positive point in visiting this amazing city. Everything else reminded me of Munch's famous painting "The Scream".

The idea behind this Cheburashka bear, as I understand it, was to make original trash cans that would become a kind of symbol of the city. He did - only for a completely different reason. By the way, this square is the center of Kiryat Gat.

Three main buildings in the city: a library (compare it with Birmingham, for example -), a cultural center and a concert hall (for comparison, let's show, for example, a concert hall in Tampere -) and a third building, about which, no matter how much I searched, there is no information could not be found. Nearby is a modern sculpture of mystical animals.

These are no longer screaming - they are frozen in horror

Well, since we are talking about modern sculptures, this is the most amazing thing

This is a monument to the victims of the Holocaust. I was so horrified at the beginning that I didn’t even get into the concept, but as my friends noticed, apparently six broken or bent strings (let’s be optimistic and imagine that this was the author’s idea, and not that the strings were broken or bent by local kids) mean six million dead Jews. The harp, accordingly, is the musical instrument of King David (it is believed that it was in the vicinity of Kiryat Gat that his battle with Goliath took place), and what the letter Shin means - one can only guess about this... In general, the monument fits very organically into the general atmosphere of the city.

Those same two stalls with falafel mentioned (15 shekels per serving!), some other eatery... and that’s it. This is where the main street ends. However, a shopping center was built on the square behind the street - as I understand it, the peak of civilization for Kiryat Gat.

The following “modern” sculpture caught my attention

At first I was just trying to understand what kind of squalor this was, which also fit very organically into the general appearance of the city, but then it turned out that behind this sculpture there was a whole tragic story hidden: it turns out that this is where the “old” center of Kiryat Gat was located - a “historical” building municipality, the “legendary” cinema “Heichal HaHasor” and the Cultural Center. All these buildings were demolished - the city hall building was decided not to be restored after the fire (I usually defend old houses, but judging by the photographs of the city hall, this is one of the few decisions of Israeli officials that I strictly support), the city residents fought for the cinema for many years (they can be understood - in a city like Kiryat Gat, a cinema is obviously the highest cultural achievement), but to no avail, and the rest was demolished quietly. All that remains is this sculptured monument, testifying to the former glory of the square.

Well, now let’s take a little walk through the “shopping arcades” in the “center”

Here you can see another masterpiece of modern architecture. The bird probably felt so bad about its location that it tried to disguise itself and hide in the bushes. I understand her very well.

Assortment of "shops".

Street vendors in Albania came back to me at that moment with the most tender nostalgia - . Well, the signs are absolutely wonderful.

If suddenly someone needs something “she”. Or to me". Or still “her”. And also large sizes - you know where to go. And if you don’t know, they will guide you, rest assured.

And if in the end you didn’t find anything for her, and there was no cloth large enough to hang herself, you can go to Beit Chabad next door. Luckily it won't get any worse.

Fountain inside the "shopping arcades". Not Hundertwasser, of course, but he, in my opinion, does not deserve such treatment. Why the hell does everything have to be turned into trash?? Moreover, there are people sitting nearby in the “cafe”. Obviously, this neighborhood suits them quite well. And that’s all for me, fortunately I didn’t have enough for more.

It is curious that Kiryat Gat is located in the very geographical center of Israel)). This is the “center” we have. Moreover, there is a huge industrial area here, and even world-scale factories such as Intel, whose representatives have been telling us for a long time about their intention to attract people to the periphery and create proper conditions for them to live and spend time. I don’t even know what kind of salary they have to pay here for a person to agree to live here.

In general, Kiryat Gat, in my opinion, very clearly explains the proverb “everything is learned by comparison.” I am sure that now Ramla - Tiberias - and even Safed - seem to us like Singapore, London and Amsterdam. But in any case, it was a useful cultural experience, and I don’t regret going)
