Swimming competitions at the FINA World Aquatics Championships started in Budapest on Sunday.

This is the most medal event at the World Complex Championships in Budapest. There will be 42 sets of awards up for grabs.

The swims will take place at the main venue of the tournament - Duna Arena, where only divers competed before the start of the swimming tournament.

“We have won everything we planned at the World Aquatics Championships at the moment. In principle, the results are not bad. In synchronized swimming, we won everything possible. In diving, we won a gold medal. There are a lot of silver and bronze awards. open water is also a good result. All events are competitive. Now it’s up to our swimmers, we’ll expect medals from them!” - Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vitaly Mutko admonished the Russian swimming team.

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Russian team won four medals. Yulia Efimova won two silver medals in breaststroke, bronze medals were won by Anton Chupkov and Evgeniy Rylov. All three will start at the World Championships in Budapest.

The qualification for participation in the World Championship was the Russian Championship in April, where swimmers had to fulfill the selection conditions. The only one who was included in the national team by decision of the coaching staff after the fact was, who is considered as a candidate for the freestyle relay.

The current World Cup winner Vladimir Morozov came to this World Cup as a favorite. After the Games, he successfully competed in short course, including at the World Championships in Windsor, Canada. Morozov himself admitted that he now has a very clear priority at individual distances. “This is a fifty-kopeck crawl, the work is designed primarily for him,” he said.

After the Russian Championship, the team competed at the stages of the international competition "Mare Nostrum", some of the leaders swam in the final of the Russian Cup in Moscow, including team captain Anastasia Fesikova, who returns to Budapest seven years later.

“To the city where I did not compete at the European Championships, then I had a back injury,” she recalled. “For me, this is the first competitive Budapest. This time, I hope I will swim in it. So much has happened during this time. So much everything happened, it’s felt. Our team is now young, there are fewer and fewer older athletes, more and more young people. But it’s good, it’s great, I like being part of this team.”

“In general, we calmly and restrainedly evaluate our results shown before the World Cup, and the American selection added optimism to us. The Americans’ results in some types of the program are tough for us,” admitted the head coach of the Russian national team

Two European Championships held in the same city four years apart is a lot. This, whether we like it or not, is recognition of the quality of the organization. This is probably why Budapest won the right to host the World Cup. Although the word “Budapest” brings to mind not the uninterrupted operation of services, but the wild downpours and thunderstorms in 2006, due to which the synchronized swimmer competitions were suspended. At the most crucial moment of the competition, someone noticed that the electrical cables, thrown, as usual, on the side and covered with plastic “bridges” so as not to be stepped on, were sinking under the water at wild speed. So they kicked everyone out of the pool - to avoid it, so to speak.

The journalists were also happy then, because after the first hour of bad weather the canvas roof of the press center began to leak, the connection was lost, and the lights went out. In 2010, the European Championship also began with disasters: during one of the training sessions, lightning struck the pool. After which I also had to stop training.

All this did not change the main thing: she took all the gold medals at those championships Russia. Two times four. And this is the main difference between the European championships and the world ones: in the current format, nine sets of awards will be played out: two in solo, four in duets (regular and mixed), two in groups and one in combination. The task of the Russian team is, accordingly, simple: win nine out of nine.

NEW DISCIPLINE - HIGHLIGHTS

It will be difficult: after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Russia changed its soloist, duet and most of the group. That is, those who have not yet done this at the World Championships will have to implement the usual task. On Wednesday, everyone, except the Chinese, gathered for training in Budapest. Information regarding the athletes of this country was extremely scarce and boiled down to the fact that representatives of the Celestial Empire would compete in Budapest as a club team, since the main one, that is, the national one, was preparing in strict secrecy for the Asian Games next year and was going to shock the world with hitherto unseen elements .

As for the elements, on Wednesday the FINA Congress decided to introduce another type of synchronized swimming program into the program of world championships - the elements tournament. Or officially - highlights. That is, all the best and most difficult things that exist in synchronized swimming. Synchronized swimmers will compete in this event in two years, but now we can already guess who the favorites will be in this event: it’s still the same Russia, Spain And China- the acrobatic training of these countries is initially higher than that of others.

MARATHON ON THE AFRICAN SANDS

As for the current battlefield, at first glance it is quite comfortable: a modern collapsible swimming pool. But there are problems. This is overly chlorinated and overly warm water. Considering that synchronized swimmers perform underwater without glasses, it is easy to understand what kind of eye strain awaits the athletes. And on the heart too: working at a frantic pace in warm water is like running a marathon on the African sands.

By the start of the competition, the organizers promised to put both in order in order to achieve ideal conditions for performances, but how much they will be able to do everything in time is an open question. Although for the Hungarians, I believe, organizing the tournament is a matter of honor: the country is already laying claim to hosting another world championship.

As for the forecasts, they are quite ordinary: if we assume that the information about the Chinese team is true, and the Chinese will be unable to compete for prizes (which, I admit, I personally have little faith in), the list of contenders for medals in most types of programs will look like this : Russia, Spain, Ukraine And Japan- in different variations. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, let me remind you that our country lost the gold medal in only one event - the short program of mixed duets (the winners were the Americans Christina Lamb-Underwood And Bill May).

Well, the first debut Svetlana Kolesnichenko in solo and duet with Alexandra Patskevich will take place on Friday.
