What is the Baltic Academy of Tourism and Entrepreneurship in St. Petersburg?

They have been going on since 1969. Then in 1988 it became clear that an entire educational institution was needed, and so later the Baltic Institute of Tourism arose. It was he who in 2005, after renaming, became the Baltic Academy of Tourism and Entrepreneurship.

The rector of the educational institution is Tamara Ilyinichna Vlasova - Honorary and Honored Worker of Higher Education in Russia, Professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences.

The Academy operates the St. Petersburg College of Tourism and Entrepreneurship, which was created to cover the full range of tourism and commercial positions in different parts of the economy, as well as to ensure that students go directly to higher education, already having experience and the necessary theoretical knowledge.

In order to participate in the competition, you must score at least 220 Unified State Exam points in relevant subjects and submit documents. If a student participated in the All-Russian Olympiads or has a certificate with honors, then these achievements count as additional points towards admission, whether for a paid or a free basis.

You can submit your application from May 28 to August 20. For absentee applications, the deadline is extended to September 10.

For admission to the master's program, internal tests are carried out for applicants, based on the results of which the group is recruited.

For schoolchildren who want to get to know the Baltic Academy of Tourism and Entrepreneurship better, an open day is held every month from October to May on the 17th for future applicants and their parents. 1. Baltic International Academy
Reviews. Discussing training at the Academy

Baltic International Academy (until 2006 - Baltic Russian Institute)- the largest non-state higher education institution in the Baltic and Northern European countries (established in 1992), which has 8,000 students, including over 500 foreign students from 20 countries in Europe and the world.
22 computer classes, 17 reading rooms, a unique “Media Bridge” system (Riga, Daugavpils, Jekabpils, Rezekne, Liepaja, Ventspils), 300 full-time teachers, including 100 doctors of science and professors.
Training is provided at BMA in higher professional education programs of the 1st and 2nd levels (duration of study - 2-2.5 years and 4-4.5 years), in academic bachelor's programs (duration of study - 3 - 4 years), as well as in professional and academic master's programs.

Education at the BIA is conducted according to the Eurolingua program - multilingual:
    Russian stream– 75% - in Russian + in Latvian and English;
    Latvian stream– 75% - in Latvian + in Russian and English;
English stream– 75% - in English + in Russian and Latvian.
As a foreign language, students can study: English, German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Russian.

Probably because by the time I entered I already had an education as an architect, 5 years of work experience in my specialty and courses at the Latvian Art Academy behind me, they didn’t teach me anything at this institute. The exception was the major subject - interior design. And even then only thanks to the teacher - she gave me knowledge based on my level, and not from the program. This infuriated my fellow students terribly, since because of me none of them could claim the highest score - before me they were like the moon.

In general, my opinion is that the program is stupid. Judge for yourself: if they study for 4 years to become a digital visualizer (who is essentially a technician), and 2 years to become an interior designer (who is essentially a designer) - is this logical?
The program simply lacks hours, subjects, and teachers. From each semester they take 2 weeks of practice (even from the first, which is nonsense).
Most of the time is occupied by painting, composition, “introduction to the specialty,” graphics, drawing, layout, “the study of letters” and other subjects not related to the specialty. Drawing is only in the 2nd year. AutoCAD - only 2 semesters, MAX - only 1 semester. Fundamentals of Architecture - also only 1 semester. Interior - only from 2nd year.
Materials Science 1st semester is SCARY, believe me. The assignments on this subject are completely crazy - if we studied it for 2 years, we could spend time painting pasta and buckwheat, otherwise...
For some reason, our color theory turned into the “Paint Theory” (this is a play on words; in the Latvian language the words color and paint are translated into one word) - we were told about pigments and binding paints. Psychology of color perception - 1 lecture. Optical color illusions - not read at all.
Lighting design was absent as a fact. There were no design standards.
Not a WORD was said about working with clients, nor about working with suppliers or builders. Nothing was said about design in marketing and business basics; they got away with some vague lectures.

In a word, I got my first degree at this institute. My fellow students who had no previous experience and education probably received more. But clearly not enough.

  2. Oh yes. I completely forgot to tell you about the nice feature of the teachers at BMA. They are the navel of the earth and know everything better than others.
I had this argument with a furniture design teacher (he himself is actually a graphic artist). He says - do a visualization. I bring him a visualization, and he says - what perspective did you bring me? Visualization is when the image is in axonometry, and all edges are highlighted with black lines. I explain to him that visualization is a PHOTO-REALISTIC image, and I hear in response:

"Where did you get this??? In books? Throw away your books and listen to what I tell you!"

Now my husband’s sister is studying in the same program, she has the same situation - previous education, experience... And the same problems with the teachers - they drive a complete blizzard with the appearance of professionals.

  3. Melamory, Thank you, it worked. You tell interesting things about your academy! Actually, every closet has its own skeletons. At my institute, for example, in mechanics classes, the professor told jokes half the time. So, without any strain, I passed mechanics with a 5.

    I'm not a designer, but a constructor

  4. Skeletons are everywhere, that's a fact. But people still go to a university primarily for knowledge, so it’s not a bad idea to have an idea of what kind of knowledge and to what extent they will be given at this university.

Besides, I have something to compare with. A one-year course at the Art Academy (7 hours a week) gave me much more than 2.5 years at Baltic. And I’m generally silent about 5 years at the Construction College, that’s where the real Education is.

  5. Melamory, and what creative and practical disciplines were you given at the academy and which of them did you like?

    I'm not a designer, but a constructor

  6. Yes, I described almost everything, it seems. I only liked the major subject - interior design.

Or do you mean my courses at the Latvian Art Academy? There I studied only drawing, painting and composition. But it’s so serious and deep that it really gave me more than BMA.

  7. Diploma of 1st level of higher professional education– Do I understand correctly that this is a state-issued diploma of higher education, not truncated, so to speak? The terms are different in all countries.

Construction College The one in question is the Riga Construction College, where they don’t teach Russian, right?

I laughed about the four-year digital imaging training.

In general, there are big problems with educational institutions that call themselves “design schools”: the demand is great, there are really very few modern programs.

  8. A first-level diploma is our Latvian know-how, as far as I understand. It is given mainly by colleges, it seems to be a diploma of higher education, but does not even give a bachelor's degree. So it's quite a strange diploma.
Fortunately, most of my clients do not delve into these subtleties - there is higher design and good.

Construction College - yes, Riga Construction College, frankly speaking, I don’t know what the situation is with the language of instruction there now. I studied for 5 years, the first 3 years in Russian, then specialization in Latvian. However, the program has already changed a couple of times; now the same specialty is taught for 4 years.

In reality, there is NOT a single educational institution in Riga that would properly train designers. At the Art Academy, they place a lot of emphasis on painting, drawing, composition and other theory. But they give minimal practical disciplines. The BMA gives a more balanced course - but it’s simply NOT MUCH. If it had been 4 years, maybe something good would have happened.

  9. about BMA

Hello, I entered the BIA this year... I just entered there from abroad and am still waiting for a residence permit...
So I’m interested, maybe you can tell me something about the Faculty of Entrepreneurship?
and I’m interested in whether their diploma is a success and how promising it is?
I would like to learn more about BMA from someone who studied there
    Thank you!

  10. In general, BMA is not the strongest university in our country - although it is one of the largest. My husband graduated from the department of entrepreneurship and public relations, but he didn’t really use his diploma. Well, except that I got a promotion at the company partly thanks to my diploma.

It is difficult for me to judge how valued their diploma is. The design, frankly speaking, is not very good. We don’t consider anyone who hasn’t graduated from the Latvian Art Academy to be a designer.

As for the diploma from the Faculty of Entrepreneurship.... I don’t know. I have a certain prejudice (and many employers share it) that people who do not know Latvian go to study at BMA (since it is the only university in Latvia where education is taught in Russian). Therefore, the attitude towards BMA graduates is rather cool.

Well, I can also add that my husband himself is not very happy with the quality of education at the BMA (I also already wrote about myself). The program is not always well thought out, the teachers are far from the best (although there are some really VERY good and highly professional ones)...

  11. For Melamory

Hello Melamory. In a discussion about some design school, you opened a topic about foreign education. Now I have all my fingers “bleeding” and still haven’t been able to settle on any specific option. Do you have any information about London schools? Or maybe any others abroad.

  12. I want to share my impressions about BMA.
I had a choice: either to enter ISMA (although this university never specialized in design) or to BMA, where, according to many, the best design. I decided to go to the BMA, even though the tuition was more expensive and they had an entrance exam.
I entered the 1st year of interior design. To be honest, I thought that everything would be much more serious.. Teachers and professors do not give 100%, if a lecture is lost, it is not reimbursed, the explanation and theory are “blurred”. If I hadn’t previously taken design courses at the “Dekors” studio (I’ll tell you about it too), then for a long time I would not have understood what program I went to at all. My classmates who have never held a pencil in their hands are very surprised whether this is how learning should be...
About organization, I’m generally silent... teachers consider it normal to be late for lectures... (yes, I understand, all sorts of circumstances can arise), but to such an extent that it would not be possible to warn, this is no longer normal, I think... About two We were actually told about the week-long practice 2 days before it started..
But some teachers will definitely remain in your heart, I guarantee you that.
The only thing I’m glad about is that I only have to study for 2 years so I can leave here as quickly as possible.
I don’t argue with the fact that every educational institution has its own problems and troubles, but judge for yourself. Let's see what happens next.
  13. Melamory, I would like to know about the master's program at the Baltic Academy
  14. Although I’m not studying design, I can still tell you about BMA. The academic part loses marks for exams and does not admit it, then you pay to retake it. Teachers are late, cancel lectures, and you find out about the cancellation on the spot. Reimbursement is rare, it’s cold in winter and autumn, they barely heat. We had one teacher who was a drunkard and she was fired only after 3 years of drinking. Most often they give grades - whether the teacher likes you or doesn't like you. And what can we say about the diploma, I’m writing right now. And it turns out that I can’t write. There is a week left before the pre-defense of the thesis, I need to bring 50 sheets of work for it, and today my teacher changed the topic, or rather returned the original one, which I wanted, arguing that he did not change it at all. I’m completely shocked... I don’t know how to defend myself... and there’s no evidence that he told me about another topic. And there is also a terrible lack of organization and everything is done at the academy at the last moment.. This is the BMA
