Koltsov Airport. Koltsovo International Airport. International air terminal

Yekaterinburg Koltsovo International Airport is located 16 kilometers southeast of Yekaterinburg itself. One of the largest Russian air carriers, Ural Airlines, is based at the airport. Koltsovo is also one of the five largest airports in Russia.

Story

In 1930, the Koltsovo military airfield was created. It was used for the needs of the Air Force Research Institute. In May 1942, it was here that the Soviet rocket plane BI-1, piloted by G. Ya. Bakhchivandzhi, took off for the first time. In 1943, in accordance with the order of the Air Force Commander-in-Chief, the Sverdlovsk airport was formed at the military airfield, which contributed to civil air transportation. According to some reports, US President F.D. Roosevelt stopped at the airport in December while flying from Tehran.

In the 50s, the Moscow-Beijing flight was operated through Koltsovo. In 1954, the hotel and air terminal buildings were erected. In 1963 - a new hotel "Liner" (with 235 beds). After 5 years, they began to operate a new passenger terminal (capacity - 700 passengers per hour). In 1983, there was a passenger arrival hall.

In January 1963, on the basis of the airport, the Sverdlovsk Civil Aviation Administration squadron was organized, which in 1991 was transformed into the First Sverdlovsk Aviation Enterprise.

In 1967, the 2nd passenger pavilion was built. In 1984, the construction of the 2nd runway was completed, which made it possible to receive aircraft of the Il-86 type. In 1993, the airport was given international status. On December 28 of the same year, two joint-stock companies were formed: Ural Airlines OJSC and Koltsovo Airport OJSC.

In 2005, new city boundaries were established, which led to the annexation of the Koltsovo village and the airport to Yekaterinburg. Two years later, 2.35 million passengers were registered as using the airport's services. This figure was second only to the airports of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

On June 1, 2009, Yekaterinburg Koltsovo began using a modern runway with a length of 3025 m and a command and control tower. The main runway allowed the airport to accommodate almost all types and classes of aircraft. Just in June, a Boeing 747 from the aviation company Air China landed, carrying a Chinese delegation.

The updated international terminal was launched in June. The new building increased the initial area of the complex to 90,000 m2 with a capacity of up to 8,400,000 people per year. However, due to a decrease in passenger traffic, BMI and Malev Hungarian Airlines left the airport.

In 2010, due to the reverse growth in passenger traffic, 14 airlines began to cooperate with the airport. As a result, 2.27 million passengers were served and 22,945.5 tons of cargo were transported. At the end of December, a new postal transportation department building was put into operation. Together with the RusLine and Dexter companies, the airport management has developed a strategy for the development of Koltsovo as a regional air transport hub. 8 regional destinations were opened.

In 2011, more than 3 million passengers were transported. In July 2012, a new cargo complex (19,185 m2) was opened. In March 2015, the airport was awarded 4 stars by Skytrax experts. Besides Koltsovo, only 19 airports around the world have such an award.
